Pregnancy and Pre-conception Part 1

Notes taken from Dr Natasha Campbell McBride at the Weston A Price conference, London 2012

Many of you won’t have heard of a dentist called Weston A Price. Dr Price who travelled the world in 1932 to find remote indigenous peoples and see the state of their teeth and their health. As he travelled, his findings led him to the belief that dental cavities and deformed dental arches resulting in crowded, crooked teeth and unattractive appearance, were merely a sign of physical degeneration. As he’d suspected, this degeneration had been caused by nutritional deficiencies.

Price travelled the world over in order to study isolated human groups, including sequestered villages in Switzerland, Gaelic communities in the Outer Hebrides, Eskimos and Indians of North America, Melanesian and Polynesian South Sea Islanders, African tribes, Australian Aborigines, New Zealand Maori and the Indians of South America. Wherever he went, Dr. Price found that beautiful straight teeth, freedom from decay, stalwart bodies, resistance to disease and fine characters were typical of primitives on their traditional diets.

His fantastic book Nutrition and Physcial Degeneration is an excellent account of his travels and the results of his research.

The Weston A. Price Foundation was created in his honour, and is a non-profit, tax-exempt charity founded in 1999. Its goal is to ‘disseminate the research of nutrition pioneer Dr. Weston Price’.

The Weston A Price foundation held a Wise Traditions conference in Epsom Downs Racecourse just outside of London on weekend of 23/24th March 2012.  Please click here to read more about it.

A lecturer in attendance was Dr Natasha Campbell McBride, author of the fantastic Gut and Psychology Syndrome (GAPS™) – Natural treatment for autism, ADHD/ADD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, depression and schizophrenia.

Dr. Campbell-McBride graduated with Honours as a Medical Doctor in 1984. After 5 years as a Neurologist and three years as a Neurosurgeon, she started a family and moved to the UK. Shortly after, her son was born and diagnosed autistic, which prompted an intensive study into causes and treatments of autism. It was during this time that Dr. Campbell-McBride developed her theories on the relationship between neurological disorders and nutrition, and completed a second Postgraduate Degree in Human Nutrition. Having treated her son off the autistic spectrum, Dr. Campbell-McBride has returned to practice in 2000 and runs the Cambridge Nutrition Clinic. She is the author of “Put You Heart In Your Mouth! What Really Is Heart Disease And What We Can Do To Prevent And Even Reverse It” and Gut and Psychology Syndrome (GAPS™) – Natural treatment for autism, ADHD/ADD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, depression and schizophrenia.

Below are some excellent notes I took from Dr Natasha’s lecture on pregnancy and preconception.

**NOTE: These notes were taken by me, from the Weston  A Price conference in March 2012. These comments do not have studies attached to them. If references are what you seek, I have provided books and websites which you can visit.**

Both part 1 and part 2 of the articles are in bullet point format, straight from my notes for ease of reading. Any additional comments from me are in blue.

Part 1

Gene expression. How much is predetermined?

The importance of a healthy gut

Toxicity

Gene expression. How much is predetermined?

  • Damage to the digestive system takes THREE TO FOUR GENERATIONS to fix. What you are doing to your body now will affect your grand children’s children. It also means what your great grandparents ate, affects you now.
  • Environmental influences on our genetics can be passed through generations. I recently saw a study that said a parent with diabetes is more likely to produce a child who will suffer from diabetes. Remember these effects are passed on through generation.
  • The emotions and thoughts of a child’s parents affect the baby’s gene expression.
  • Maternal diet predetermines gene expression in foetus.

The following affect the shaping of your child’s genetics.

  • Diet of both the mother AND the father
  • Alcohol and tobacco
  • The gut flora (the balance of good and bad bugs inside your stomach)
  • Exposure to environmental toxins
  • Insulin dominance (ie diabetes type II)
  • Chronic illness

The importance of a healthy gut

  • A deficiency in B vitamins can lead to anaemia and/or birth defects. It will also make you pale and pasty. B Vitamins are manufactured by gut flora so if your gut is unhealthy you will be deficient.
  • A mother with abnormal gut flora is likely to have an unhealthy baby.
  • Babies acquire bacteria from their mother in the birth canal. This flora comes from the bowel.
  • In a C-Section, the birth canal is not used. The child’s immune system is then compromised because of lack of flora. This can lead to frequent ear and chest infections.

Toxicity

  • Detoxification before conception is absolutely vital.
  • Toxins from abnormal gut flora in the mother’s body will alter the genes. (How can you tell if you have  abnormal flora? Constipation, diarrhea, thrush, dandruff, autism, ADHD/ADD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, depression and schizophrenia are all linked to poor gut health )
  • Exposure to man made chemicals (painting your room, make up, hairspray)
  • During pregnancy, the foetus accumulates toxins from the mother. This is a common cause of miscarriage. Multiple miscarriages should be looked at from the point of view that the mother is too toxic for the baby to survive.
  • During pregnancy the 1st child is always at risk. Toxins pass from the mother to the 1st born. Generally after that the mother is less toxic.
  • Flora is damaged by toxicity.
  • Avoid dental work when pregnant. Do not increase toxic load.
  • Pregnancy is a natural state of immune system suppression. This can lead of proliferation of abnormal gut flora and yeast overgrowth.
  • She told us a story about Canadian women after WWII who worked in a toxic factory and they were advised to have children to pass the toxins. The babies never survived but the mother had dumped all the toxins
  • Avoid personal care products, soaps, oils sprays etc. They ALL increase toxic load. Look specifically for products that don’t contain chemicals. Look here.http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/
  • Use this rule for moisturiser. If you wouldn’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin. Coconut oil works well as does olive oil
  • Shut off all electrical equipment when not in use. Wifi, TV, clock. This includes when you sleep.

That’s it for part one.
